Introducing Touch: Your true social life on your phone

Over the past 9 months, we at Enflick have been busy building the foundation for a platform that delivers an incredible experience. We took our time to understand how people actually interact with close friends and family in life, and used that understanding to design a simple user experience. Then, we redeveloped our technology from the ground-up to deliver that instant, reliable and personal experience.

The result?

Today we are introducing our new platform, Touch.

To learn more about Touch, visit touch.com.

Why did we create Touch? Today there are many communication tools and social networks available. Some are built to maintain relationships with acquaintances, some are built to maintain interest-based public relationships, and still others are for instant communication. However, none of these tools really support us as we maintain our most important relationships.

In real life, we don’t share our life experiences with everyone we’ve ever met – it’s important for us to control who is watching to really be ourselves. When we do this, we don’t stop and think about it; our groups naturally change as our context changes. To maintain our real social life while being apart, we need the same simple experience – the power to naturally stay in full control of our social connections.

In October 2009, we introduced PingChat! to the iTunes App Store as the first free mobile messenger for iPhones and iPods, and it became an instant hit. After introducing PingChat! for Android and BlackBerry to make it cross-platform, PingChat! has grown to over 13 million users worldwide. Our mission since day one has been to bring people around the world closer with their friends and family. By introducing Touch today, we’re taking another step towards delivering on that mission.

Loving it but you took out the ability to send sounds and videos and stuff.

Thanks for the feedback, we will be re introducing these items shortly!

      • Miguel

The main problem is.. why the hell you don’t mention any of that in the homepage?? I’ve read “transition phase” for the first time in these comments! you should at least post some information about that before the users ‘update’ their WORKING app
        I feel damn cheated
btw massive crash on most blackberries…

cmon you are losing for lack of info! and for not bringing the chance to revert drastic actions! (1st class of user interfaces…)

  • Ifbrocks

    sucks
birng back videos and voice messages!

    • Ifbrocks

      Bring*

      • http://www.facebook.com/derek13 Derek Ting

Thanks for your feedback. We will re-introduce video messages in Touch.

        • my name don’t matter!

and how do we roll back the update for the time being? new updated programs are supposed to be better. I have no idea who this would be better for unless you are marketing to minimalist who think it’s cool to have less features. looks like you are going to lose some customers over this one unless your developers are burning the midnight oil as we speak. this is like trading a Ferrari for a Pinto.

        • Goodwhitechocolate

You have left a good thing alone and I am 62 yr gmom, this new site is bulls—,
          I want my pingchat back

          • http://www.facebook.com/gjrevans Gordon Evans

Thanks for the feedback, we understand that there will be some confusion over the new update as we go through this transition phase. Please understand that Touch is no longer PingChat, but rather a completely new app with an entirely new outlook. We are certain that in time the new app will suit the needs of our users in a completely new and innovative way and in turn will take some getting used to. We have built touch from the ground up on a much more reliable and powerful platform that will be capable of much more than PingChat would have ever been able to provide. Touch enhancements and features will continue to be rolled out over the next few months as we optimize the processes and make sharing with friends even better.

            Best,

            Gordon

  • Hot_sicilian45

    1) I lost all my contacts
    2) I lost all my conversations
    3) I lost the ability to send videos and audio
    4) No emocions

    WORTHLESS!

    • Snappypurchase

Wow – thanks for the DOWNGRADE!! Touch is useless, I lost all contacts, can’t even add a person who does exist. can’t manage contacts, can use emoticons, no video and voice messages – and it looks BAD. Bring back PING!

    • Crapapp

yeah, its a joke. I just deleted this stupid app. Sorry to see Ping gone, it was an excellent application

          • http://www.facebook.com/derek13 Derek Ting

Have you tried resetting your password? Tap reset password and the app will send you an email with a link to reset your password.

  • Max

PingChat! is good and simple chat messaging app with just chat…
But now it’s one complicated social network which is added in a long list… :(

    • Crapapp

Agreed Max – what a stupid move to this new useless look. Ping was unreal and had all the simplistic goodies of a good chat app. I think touch is trying to be a smartphone facebook look alike. I just deleted the app. its yuk !

  • Lanecovewest

My friends/contacts have become ‘profiles’,(where’s the love) you cant manage contacts anymore, or delete people, my partner can’t be added for some reason, functionality is much more limited than Ping, no video, no audio, and no more smilies! This app is a trainwreck now. “new experience” = BAD experience. I wish I had Ping back and never updated to Touch. Guess I’ll have to go back to SMS.

  • Majorjinx

Geez, talk about taking away features. I used to use Ping 50 times a day. The new touch is crap! I’d pay $5 to have ping back. Its so much better

  • Oneperson

R.I.P Ping you good thing – and goodbye touch forever – its the worst chat app I’ve seen. Everything about it BITES !

  • MISTERMEE

Derek – WHAT HAVE YOU DONE! You turned an excellent app into a piece of crap. When your on a good thing stick to it. Don’t try reinvent the wheel! Goodbye touch and hello iMessage – SIGH !!!!!!!!!!

  • jayceone

Dear Derek: please add the following features back again:
    - video and audio messaging
    - the ability to leave the conversation then get added back in the same conversation
    - the ability to customize chat bubble’s colors
    - the ability to add more people in a chat room (whats the max size?)
    - more emoticons

im sure if these features were on then it would be a great upgrade…

    thank you

    • jayceone

oh and be able to copy convos too

      • Crapapp

        Totally Jay – its hopeless

      • http://www.facebook.com/gjrevans Gordon Evans

Updated last night and now waiting on apple!

    • No touch for me!

Agreed ! I can’t believe all the functions are gone – this new app is pathetic. Not only that – it looks and feels really bad, like a 10 year old developed it. not happy Jan !

    • http://www.facebook.com/gjrevans Gordon Evans

Thanks for the feedback, we understand there will be some confusion over the new update as we go through this transition phase. Gordon

      • unhappychatter

You completely avoided the fact your removed two of the features that made it worth having as other apps do whats left better..

      • TouchSucks

I really hope all you people at Enflickr have other jobs lined up. With R&D and PR like this, you’re definitely going to need them – soon! I worked at eBay for years, and saw a lot of bad roll-outs, but this one takes the whole bakery. Very bad.

    • Awais

I agree they should especially change the bubble colour kik messenger is better get it

  • Touch Sucks BIGTIME

What a waste of 9 months to develop this shit! ping was simple, effective and had good functionality. I’m embarrassed for your release – its very poor.

  • WTF

WTF is this crap. I want my ping back !

  • LMFAO

LMFAO – don’t ‘touch’ this shit. Its up there with top 10 ‘crapapps’

  • Pingme

Since ping chat is gone, had to find a new instant chat program. it doesn’t have all the features, but try “ping me” at the app store

    • http://www.facebook.com/gjrevans Gordon Evans

Thanks for the feedback, we will be re introducing these items shortly!

  • hungrybeagle

My gf is absolutely pissed. ALL of the cute audio messages I sent her have been wiped out, GONE. We’re going to find another app that does all the things that Pingchat used to.

    • http://www.facebook.com/gjrevans Gordon Evans

Thanks for the feedback, we will be re introducing these items shortly!

  • http://www.jauhari.net/ Jauhari

Awesome…. We will waiting Group Chat and More Feature on Share… not just images, but also Music, Locations and share to Twitter, Facebook etc

    • http://www.facebook.com/gjrevans Gordon Evans

All are coming! Please be patient as we transition to Touch. Group chats are already available by creating a new chat and adding multiple members.

  • Cam1042

Wow, I have not even downloaded the new app yet as I had heard it sucked. So I went to do a little research first, and now I am pretty sure I wont even bother to download Touch. I can’t find a single good review. I would suggest you start explaining your app as no one seems to like it. Your first blog entry sounds good and all, but it according everyone the actual app sucks. Maybe people are missing somethng. You should publish something fast.

    • http://www.facebook.com/gjrevans Gordon Evans

Thanks for the feedback. Please bear with us as we transition to touch by continue to improve and create new enhancements!

  • Ziggy317

What have they spent 9 month doing to improve the app taken away audio and video that’s a step backward useless app the feedback and reviews say it all

you ruined pingchat.I’m lazy and typically dont feel the need to add to the negative comments. but I HAVE to for this. I’m so pissed right now. Now my goal for the next few days is to have all pingchat/touch users switch to another app. Unless there is a fix/update in the next week I will be switching apps. Pingchat was perfect for communicating with my gf who lives in a different country, but you’ve strained our communications because one I updated MY CONTACTS WERENT SAVED……AND I cant add any friends via any source we’re given because I keep getting errors.cmon, thats just terrible.I could rant all day but I actually need to go work.Way to put out shoddy work.

    • http://www.facebook.com/gjrevans Gordon Evans

We appreciate you taking the time to help us out in our transition with feedback. Please stick with us through this transitional period. We are listening to the feedback and trying to implement what is required. We will continue to roll out enhancement and updates to the new more reliable and powerful platform!

  • ibnsmom

    Dear Derek;

PINGCHAT WHY DID YOU THINK THAT THIS CHANGE WAS NEEDED,YOU TOOK AWAY WHAT MADE IT DIFFERENT FROM ALL OTHER SITES, THE ABILITY TO ADD VIDEO, MUSIC AND AUDIO. BIG MISTAKE ON THIS ONE PINGCHAT IS THE BEST AND I HATE TO DELETE TOUCH BECAUSE OF MY CONTACTS ON THERE. YOU NEED TO GIVE US BACK WHAT MADE US GO TO IT IN THE FIRST PLACE. NOW I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THE SITE TO ANYONE ELSE

    • http://www.facebook.com/gjrevans Gordon Evans

We appreciate you taking the time to help us out in our transition with feedback. Please stay tuned as we continue to roll out enchantments and updates to the new more reliable and powerful platform!

  • babystreat

one of the things i loved about ping was that you could see when someone was typing and when they’d read your message. GONE! what a POS.

    • http://www.facebook.com/derek13 Derek Ting

Once your friends update to Touch, you will see when they’re typing and when they read your message.

      • Goodwhitechocolate

Not as good as pingchat you messed up a good thing

      • my name don’t matter!

why would anyone want to downgrade to Touch? This app is crap. Don’t look like you care either. Anyway, there’s more apps out there. Stick a fork in this one, it’s done.

  • Shebash1049

You took a good thing and turned into a piece of crap. Touch should never replace pingchat. That was the best chat site. I had been telling friends about ping and now I’m warning to stay away. You should have left a good thing alone or bring back music, audio and video otherwise you will lose us all together.

    • http://www.facebook.com/gjrevans Gordon Evans

We appreciate you taking the time to help us out in our transition with feedback. Please stay tuned as we continue to roll out enchantments and updates to the new more reliable and powerful platform!

  • Bsudave

Yep. As with almost ALL the posters on here, TOUCH definitely “rubs me wrong.” My 11 year old daughter who lives in another state was loving texting me with Ping, until you screwed it up completely. Thanks a lot. You suck. Touch sucks. I’ll have to see if she likes skype. Or Text Me!, or something else. ANYthing else.

    Bring back:

    Video and Audio messaging
    Location sharing
    Message save
More emoticons than the lame ones you include in touch.

I will be checking to see if this gets done, but I’m sure your motives had nothing to do with pleasing customers. Had to be $$…somehow you think pissing off all your users will make you MORE money. Interesting strategy. How’s it working?

    • http://www.facebook.com/gjrevans Gordon Evans

We appreciate you taking the time to help us out in our transition with feedback. Please stay tuned as we continue to roll out enchantments and updates to the new more reliable and powerful platform!

  • Bsudave

Yes – bring back that nifty feature that lets me see when they are typing, too. Heck, bring it all back. Touch is for the trash can. Ping was the best.

  • Disappointed@BadApp.com

Positives – Time next to each message, Yea!
    Negative – Everything else.

  • Pingedoff

Not really impressed. Performance was a bit patchy but now the notifications are less obvious and there is a lot of &$&$ in the way of simple messages.
It is not going to be the next Facebook – accept it.
On the positive it may let you log on on multiple devices but I haven’t found that yet.

    • http://www.facebook.com/gjrevans Gordon Evans

I found an app called “KIK” yesterday that does a lot of the things that were lost in this “upgrade.” Seems to work well so far. Doesn’t have location or video sharing tho. Still trying it out. I can say it’s WAAAAAY better than “Touch.”

  • Murina

I upgraded to Touch, however when using my device, Blackberry, I am unable to delete the conversation. I followed the directions on how to delete, but the conversation still appears, if i go back to the chat. Also, it would be nice to have the status feature back….

    • http://www.facebook.com/gjrevans Gordon Evans

      Try updating here: http://touch.com

  • my name don’t matter!

Hello everyone. Due to the complaints as to how much Touch sucks, we should be in the market for another app. But first, let’s laugh at the entry here: “By introducing Touch today, we’re taking another step towards delivering on that mission.” HAHAHAHA!!! You mean it took 9 months to make a crap app? And replaced an app that I thought was great! And you call that progress???

Anyway, here you folks go and thank me later.

    http://www.tango.me/

    • Bring back Pingchat!

Personally ive moved to whatsapp, this just seems like a place to moan about the upgrade and talk about which alternative were using now.

    • http://www.facebook.com/gjrevans Gordon Evans

Thanks for the feedback, we understand there will be some confusion over the new update as we go through this transition phase. Please understand that Touch is no longer PingChat, but rather a completely new app with an entirely new outlook. Gordon

      • Touchsucks

Yea, you’re calling it a new app but when I was forced to update I was never told “replace app with…” it was update.

        Poorly played on all streets.

  • TouchSucks

Have you resurrected Ping yet? What are you DOING over there? Don’t you CARE? How many negative comments about Touch is it going to take? Get to work!

    • http://www.facebook.com/gjrevans Gordon Evans

We listen to everything our users have said and are making moves toward our follow up updates. We released a less dynamic version of the app so that we could get users updated and then reintroduce enhancements after working out the kinks of the upgrade. :D Thanks for your patience.

  • Anilumagloire

Please bring the old Ping back! The sounds on this Touch app are practically non existent. I never hear my messages coming in and I hate missing them.
    Fix this!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/gjrevans Gordon Evans

This fix went out in an update last night! :D

  • Castillo_lucyae

my messajes can’t be send :’(

  • I am Dissapoint

    This is really frustrating “upgrade”

Why did I lose my contacts? Would it have been that hard to carry them over with the upgrade?

I lost the ability to save pictures and save video, and all the old pics I didn’t save yet are no longer available.

This “upgrade” killed the features I use pingchat for…. I really hope you guys are scrambling to fix this mess you have created!

In the meantime how do I downgrade to the old version? or do I have to switch to whatspp or some other alternative?

    • http://www.facebook.com/gjrevans Gordon Evans

Hi, thanks for the feedback. We have definitely been listening to the feedback and are way ahead of of scrambling. We plan to reintroduce features over then next few months as we continue to build and provide a superior and more reliable service!

  • WM

Almost the entire written history of my fiancé’s and my courtship is on PingChat. I can’t believe that you have labored and labored to create this Facebook wanna-be without taking the time to create a way to save conversations. In Skype, I can load every conversation we’ve had, since the very beginning.
Unfortunately, my fiancé upgraded to Touch because he thought it was required (really crafty way to design the splash page notice, btw, with the option to close the window and opt out being practically hidden at the bottom–oops, did I say “crafty? I meant deceitful). I haven’t upgraded, and I won’t be upgrading unless this feature is put in place.
How can you expect people to turn to you to create and support lasting, rich communication without a way to go back and revisit and review what they’ve shared? Without a way to save their photos and videos?
I have a feeling that your entire company is run by kids under 30. When you’re that young, everything breezes by and you see such things as disposable. As you get older and realize the value of the ongoing threads of relationship in your life, you begin to treasure the story, the history, of the communication in your relationship (think: reading old cards and letter and love letters and looking at old photographs).
Please pay attention to all these comments. I’m certain that they represent the opinions of many, many people in addition to those who cared enough to take the time to write.

    • http://www.facebook.com/gjrevans Gordon Evans

Hi, we absolutely appreciate the gravity of what you are saying and we do listen to everything that all of our users say! It’s important that we do listen so that we can make our products even better. We did not release this update to cause frustration but rather to provide an even better and more powerful way to share and stay in touch with friends. Please bear with us as we move through this transition phase! :D

  • Taha_yahia

stfu in your face who change pingchat for touhc stfu i hate you

  • Bring back Pingchat!

Do they really call this an update? although i haven’t tried a lot of the features from what people are saying there seem to be a lot missing.

i think the new icon for touch is awful, in no way does it represent what the app is used for, it looks more like a colour picker for some kind of drawing app. plus the old ping chat icon just looked a lot nicer.

if i talked to someone on pingchat id say ill ping you later as appose to ill text you later or something like that. what am i supposed to say now ill touch you later? -.-

This comes down to personal choice really but i don’t like the new design the good ol pingchat style was much nicer.

oh and id keep my conversations with the update? sure i kept some, but from months ago. which was useless as i updated half way through a conversation so it didn’t even keep what i received 5 mins beforehand on pingchat. After using pingchat daily for over 6 months ive moved to whatsapp after this bad update.

    • http://www.facebook.com/gjrevans Gordon Evans

Thanks for the feedback, Touch will continue to develop over the next few months as we continue to optimize new features and enhancements!

      Best,

      Gordon

  • Anilumagloire

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!!!! Bring the old Ping back. For the love!!

  • Anonymous

When I installed the Touch download to replace pingchat I lost my sound alert for incoming mail. Do you have a fix. …. my email is : mrbouzanne@nf.sympatico.ca

  • thekid

this app suck we want ping chat back the only cool feature that touch has is that you could search for people that should be add to ping chat

  • SC

Awful. This is not an upgrade it’s an different app. As a developer for a global company all I can say is Piss Poor in all respects.

  • …………

It doesnt work for Blackberry,it just screwed up my whole phone!

  • Patito8010

I hate this new version!! I lost all my contacts and all my conversations plus i dont know why i cant add my friends again and it says those contacts dont exist!! Argggg

  • Dragonwing

Why DOWNGRADE something? No option to save images anymore, no option to send videos – if this isn’t added soon, I’ll be deleting the whole thing.

  • Santosh_95

pingchat was way cooler!! touch is really slow!! please fix it!! and make it more user atractive! thanx

  • Red

at the very least you should have allowed us to add through pingchat ids of our contacts or at this stage maybe allow a roll back

  • Damian

Actively dislike the new version – A quick google indicates you are shedding good will everywhere, very poor decision, I want the old application back and will be deleting touch.

  • Nightfalltech

Way to completely misunderstand your user base while thinking you can jump on the social networking bandwagon with your established user base. Please for the love of god now release ping chat as a SEPARATE app. It was ideal for it’s purpose. I’ve lost my way to communicate with my girlfriend who is currently overseas thanks to this upgrade, and i don’t want to have a ‘profile’ and ‘friends’ … i just want a simple internet based chat application… your new application is a cynical attempt to leverage your existing user base into a new paradigm. I’m advising all of my friends and contacts to switch to alternate applications.

  • Anonymous

Thank you for giving me real reason to use iMessage and/or WhatsApp. “Touch” has turned into something I really want to avoid. I don’t want another wannabe social network that let’s me share “experiences” … just give us back PingChat so that we can send videos and contacts again….

  • Malayboi

you lot’s think u know what to do? yes damn right you know to mess thing up !!! I have lost all of my contact ! I will report this to iTunes !

  • A very frustrated user.

What I don’t understand is this: you continue to see these messages telling you how frustrated users are with this “update” (which is, in the end, a completely new app that should have been marketed as such) and yet you continue to provide canned responses (some with spelling errors, even!) that don’t address what your user base is really upset about. You seem to miss what’s being said here. This isn’t just about missing features, bad sounds, and childish looking user interfaces. It’s about betraying the loyalty of your users by providing an application and then forcing everyone to beta test a completely new application without providing people the choice.

Yes, the new application goes in a different direction than PingChat, and that’s the direction you apparently wanted to go. Great. All the best. But your PingChat users didn’t want to follow, yet were forced to do so. I, too, find it unbelievable that you’d rip and replace probably one of the most popular mobile instant messaging applications for such a beta quality application without giving users a chance to evaluate whether they found Touch to be “delivering on [your] mission”.

I would recommend that you consider humility rather than bravado and actually address what people are frustrated with. Features can be easily added, but a user’s trust is more valuable. You’ve broken that trust. And as you can see from the comments here and on the iTunes store, people are unhappy.

  • Joe766548

i cant copy the pics any more or i cant send short videos
not as goog as ping was to be mutch better

  • Emma

    TOUCH. SUCKS.

  • Undecided.

I still have PingChat! it keeps telling me to try and update to Touch for the past 2 weeks, but seeing all this negativity for the new update…I’m just thinking I should not update to Touch and stick to PingChat!
Shall I update or stick to PingChat!?
For those who actually have Touch, what are your pros & cons?

    • Miguel

      pro: fast sending speed
con: all features lost, history lost, need to readd contacts as “friends”, crash on bb, blah blah blah

  • Coralzzz

Awwwww man I updated it and i had a video that i sent when i had pingchat and now it’s gone cuz you can’t send videos with touch :( .

  • Nathan

this is a great turn around just need voice recorder but its good

  • Two Wheeler

Lost all it’s good points. Video , voice and maps. Disappointing

As a Christmas Gift please Update Touch with all the features PingChat had but with this excellent looking UI. You´ll probably have every Christmas dinner in the World talking about it so it would be perfect timing in orden to Grow in Users

    Hi Gordon,
It seems you’re stuck on “repeat”. Although I can imagine it must be hard to get such bad comments on something you’ve apparently spend quite some time on to develop. Unfortunately, your update is too late for me. I’ve switched to Whatsapp. And for the life of me I can’t understand why you would think we would all be interested in some kind of social networking thingy, when you were doing so very well with that wonderfully simple chat/text app I just loved. I don’t know how it was in the rest of the world, but we in Holland even made a verb out of it: to ping someone. Well I’m sorry but there is no way we’ll ever say: I’ll touch you later. Or not in this context, at least. So that’s that. Sad….

“Over the past 9 months, we at Enflick have been busy building the foundation for a platform that delivers an incredible experience”

    1. We as users dont understand why you took almost one year to disable great functionalities like voice note and vedio sharing and replace an app that does nothing but send instant messages?

    2. Please add audio note and video sharing functionality back ASAP like Pingchat used to have. Pingchat used to be the one and only application that can actually beat Whatsapp because of it’s compatibility with Ipad now it’s being replaced with a piece of crap called Touch which does not allow people to stay in touch with friends and family like Pingchat used to do!

  • Help!

I can’t seem to figure out how to save pics that have been sent to me . Doesn’t seem to matter if they are sent directly or are shared by an experience. Any idea how to do this?

Touch doesn’t even work on my HTC desire, I’ve never been one to buy a phone to play an app but cmon it ain’t a bad phone, ping! On the other hand worked flawlessly, I’m deleting this crap all that about learning about how people interact? what a load of bollocks. all pride and wankery aside what I really wanted was an interface that did what it said it could, an interface that would allow me free communications between myself and my friends even when I had no credit, I can’t get that from this step backward and so I look for something else, thankyou for frustration and nothing, next time don’t.

Touch froze. Re-installed and it won’t let me log in. Tried “forgot password” and it says it can’t email me a new one…???????????????????

  • I’m cut off from the world!!!

    Can somebody help me?
Ive just upgraded Touch (Which I think is very good) and I found after I upgraded and clicked on the app it says “Upgrading Touch to the latest version! This may take several minutes. Please wait.” When I wait the screen will eventually go black and go back to my home screen. I have waited two days (Nearly three) to get on and I can’t.
I would be very happy if someone could help me out.
